Airless Tires? Yes, it’s possible!
Michelin, the renowned French tire company, aims to revolutionize the industry with the launch of its groundbreaking Uptis tires, which are airless!

These tires have already been tested on vehicles such as the Chevrolet Bolt EV, but testing continues as they are considered suitable for next-generation electric passenger vehicles that leave no environmental footprint. Michelin Uptis is expected to be launched in 2024, in collaboration with General Motors, initially in East Asian markets, and later in other countries.
Specifically, we're talking about the Unique Puncture-proof Tire System (Uptis), which, instead of an air inlet, combines an aluminum wheel with a flexible plastic and fiberglass laminate. The result? It is more durable under stress, there’s no risk of punctures, and it lasts much longer than conventional tires—about three times longer.
Moreover, the driver doesn’t have to worry about the tire bursting or losing control, nor do they need to check the tires regularly to add or remove air.
Another very important aspect is that, since its construction involves the three materials mentioned above, it automatically becomes environmentally friendly, as these materials do not release harmful microplastic particles into the environment—unlike conventional tires, which are one of the largest global pollutants. Furthermore, every year, 20% of tires are discarded—either because they burst, wear out, or quickly lose pressure, weighing as much as 2 million tons, or 200 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower!
Michelin has filed 50 patent applications for the Uptis tires and was named Tire Manufacturer of the Year at the Tire Expo in Hanover in 2020, where it also won the 2020 Tire Technology Innovation Award.
